[International] USA Summer Camp in Japan
Dear International Listserve Member & Students who indicated an
interest in USA Summer Camp:
Just a reminder that the application deadline for USA Summer Camp is this
coming Friday, November 1.
Each year UW Oshkosh sends students interested in going to Japan to
volunteer at USA Summer Camp (in Japan). This trip is free for
students, who need to commit approximately 9 weeks of their summer to
attending camp as an English Language Counselor for about half of the
time and staying with a host family for the other half. We're
starting to advertise early this year because we've received news which
leads us to believe that we may be able to send as many as 25 students
next summer (as compared to 12 this past summer). I've copied
information from Guy Healy, Japan, the program administrators in
Japan, below.
The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh has had a relationship with Guy
Healy, Japan for over 13 years and participates in several international
programs with this company each year.
***************
USA Summer Camp
late June to late August (dates are tentative)
Each summer Guy Healy, Japan, a culture-exchange consulting agency based
in Nagasaki and Fukuoka, Japan, invites high school and college students
from the United States to visit Japan as part of the USA Summer Camp
program. The students from America stay in Japan for approximately nine
weeks. During this period the students work as camp counselors at USA
Summer Camp for part of their stay and stay with Japanese host families
for part of their stay. Japanese language ability is not required to
apply for this program.
USA SUMMER CAMP: This is an English language program for Japanese
students, elementary school age through college. During the summer each
counselor works at approximately half of the camp sessions. There is also
a four-night counselor orientation session that takes place at the camp
facility upon arrival in Japan.
The camp program takes place at a national campground in Nagasaki
Prefecture and in other parts of Japan. The campground is quite
comfortable with indoor sleeping and dining facilities. (*This is more
like a student dormitory than a camp like we have in the U.S.)
During the program the students from America act as camp counselors,
working with the Japanese students on a variety of English language
drills and activities. Counselors also participate with the Japanese
students in recreation activities, meals and variety of social
activities.
HOST FAMILIES: Each student stays with a volunteer family in the Nagasaki
or Fukuoka area. Most families have at least one family member who can
speak English. Using information forms filled out by host families and
student applicants, organizers will do their best to make suitable
placements.
COST/COMPENSATION:

families for room and board.
