[International] Japanese Taiko drum groups perform Sept. 8 at Union
Dear International Listserv Member:
Japanese Taiko drum groups perform Sept. 8 at
Union
OSHKOSH?Two Japanese drum groups from a small fishing village near
Tokyo will perform in a free concert at the University of Wisconsin
Oshkosh from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8.
The event will be in the ballroom of Reeve Memorial Union, 748 Algoma
Blvd. It is one of several performances scheduled by the groups during a
U.S. tour.
Two groups of Taiko drummers ? each with 15 members ? will perform. They
include Choshi Hane Daiko (Jumping Drumming), whose members range
in age from 11 to 58. The group seeks to preserve the unique beating
techniques handed down for generations in their fishing
community.
Choshi Hane Daiko, formed in 1979, has performed for Japan?s
emperor and empress, World Expo events in Tsukuba and Seville, Spain, and
with Michael Jackson in Tokyo. It has also played throughout Europe and
in Chicago, Boston, New York and Milwaukee and at Lawrence University in
Appleton.
The other group is Hishou Shibuki Daiko (Splashing Waves of
Sound), with members ranging in age from 15 to 49. It was formed in 1996
and ?strives to create sounds that endlessly echo and traverse
space?.?
Information on Taiko drumming can be found at
www.taiko.com/resource/taiko.html.
The free concert at UW Oshkosh is one of four area stops for the groups.
They are also scheduled to perform Sept. 5 at Christ the Rock
Church in Menasha, Sept. 6 at Menasha High School and Sept.
7 at Clovis Grove Elementary School in Menasha.
