[International] Space Available on Intensive Spanish in Cuernavaca, Mexico study abroad program!

Dear Student:

You are receiving this message as an announcement that there are still seats available on the Intensive Spanish in Cuernavaca, Mexico study abroad program (December 26, 2003 ~ January 25 , 2004).

Join other students from UW Oshkosh and from around the world for language and culture courses and workshops taught at Cuauhnáhuac Spanish Language Institute! Students focus on grammar and language practice, participate in guided conversations, and learn situational Spanish or involve themselves in cultural conferences daily. Weekly excursions to important historical and cultural sites and a homestay opportunity round out the experience.

Students may also volunteer to work with Mexican children from low-income neighborhoods. The program is geared towards establishing a relationship with the children and teaching them some English.

Cuauhnáhuac Spanish Language Institute is located in Cuernavaca, Morelos, México, about 1 1/2 hours from México City. It is housed in a former residence with beautiful green gardens, a swimming pool, a volleyball / basketball court and patios for relaxing and enjoying spring-like temperatures all year round. It's the perfect place to be during a Wisconsin winter! The administration building includes a computer lab, a reference library, a large living room, and a lecture hall. A quaint restaurant offers a varied menu of typical Mexican meals. The school also organizes occasional gatherings and cultural activities such as craft workshops, conversation language exchanges, and movie nights.

Classes begin every Monday throughout the year for students at all levels, from the complete beginner to the advanced. Upon arrival at the Institute, the academic director assesses students' knowledge and abilities and places each student in an appropriate class with others at the same level.

Most students participate in the normal intensive Spanish language program, which consists of six hours of class daily: 3 hours of grammar and language practice with no more than five students per class, 1 1/2 hours of guided conversation, and, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 1 1/2 hours of situational Spanish for beginners or cultural conferences for advanced students. Situational Spanish introduces the vocabulary necessary for everyday situations. Conferences explore subjects such as history, art, indian cultures, politics, society, pre-hispanic Mexico, etc. On Tuesdays and Thursdays students participate in workshops in special language and cultural topics, such as pronunciation, idiomatic expressions, Mexican songs and latino dancing. All courses are taught in Spanish.

A maximum of 4 credits may be earned.

·       Intermediate Reading (SPAN 204; 3 credits)
