I am writing to inform you of an exceptional fellowship opportunity for
underrepresented minority students interested in pursuing careers in
international affairs. The Institute for International Public Policy
(IIPP) was established in 1994 with a multi-year grant from the U.S.
Department of Education.* This Fellowship, administered by IIPP,
represents a direct response to the identified national need to create a
more diverse talent pool of well-trained, language-proficient professionals
from which U.S. international affairs agencies, as well as other
organizations can draw highly qualified personnel.
The IIPP Fellowship Program provides students specially designed education
and training experiences critical to entry and advancement in international
affairs careers. Students are admitted from across the nation and apply as
sophomores to participate in a five-year sequence of summer policy
institutes, study abroad, intensive language training, internships, and
graduate study. The program boasts a retention rate of nearly 90 per cent.
The selection process is based on demonstrated academic ability ? at least
a 3.2 GPA - and strong interest in international affairs. In addition,
admitted students must have a commitment to a multi-year training program
that includes three summers of intensive enrichment courses. Economics,
international relations, foreign language, and business majors are natural
applicants, but students interested in careers in public health, the
sciences, and the humanities have also submitted successful applications.
Funding is provided for all facets of the program. Applications can be
downloaded from our web site at www.uncfsp.org/iipp.
As we prepare for the entrance of our tenth cohort of students, we ask for
your assistance in both making the IIPP Fellowship known to your students
and also helping us to identify applicants for this unique opportunity. If
you know of colleagues who might also be able to refer students to us,
please forward this email message to them. In a few weeks, we will follow
up this electronic message with a mailing to your institution that includes
brochures, flyers, and applications. In the meantime, if you have
questions about the Fellowship, please do not hesitate to contact us at
800-530-6232 or via email at iippfellowship@uncfsp.org.
We thank you in advance for your assistance, and we look forward to hearing
from you in the near future so that we can work together to make this
Fellowship opportunity available to your students.
Sincerely yours,
Wardell Robinson-Moore
Assistant Director
for Academic Affairs, IIPP
*The grant was awarded pursuant to Title VI, Part C, section 621 of the
Higher Education Act that was later transferred to the United Negro College
Fund Special Programs Corporation (UNCFSP).
