Join us as we celebrate International Education during the week of November 14-19, 2005!

The UW Oshkosh Office of International Education has partnered with
faculty, staff, student organizations and student volunteers to bring you
the following schedule of events.  Feel free to attend as many
events as you like!

Monday, November 14

5:00-6:00pm ? International Education Week Kickoff (Reeve Union 221)    Culture Shock in the Arctic: one teacher's learning begins Join Dr. Lori Carrell as she describes her experience with culture shock while teaching in Alaska. Hear stories about the mistakes she made and the basic lessons she learned - lessons which formed the foundation for future study in intercultural communication.

Dr. Carrell?s commitment to inspire positive transformation through communication has fueled more than twenty years of teaching, speaking and consulting. Her listeners have included business professionals, students in kindergarten through college, prisoners, educators, military personnel, preachers, parishioners and Eskimos.
Her formal education in Speech Communication (Ph.D., University of Denver ), Counseling Psychology (M.A., University of Alaska-Anchorage ), and Communication Education, Theatre, and Psychology (B.A., Anderson University ) is balanced by diverse life experiences. That foundation of living includes culture shock as a teacher in an Eskimo village, artistic performances on camera and on stage, research of public speaking in churches across the country and the daily intensity of parenthood.
As a former Endowment for Excellence Professor at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, Professor Carrell currently teaches in the Department of Communication and also serves as coordinator of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Initiative.

Tuesday, November 15

• 12:00-1:00pm - Geology and Geopolitics of Oil Near the End of the Petroleum Age (Reeve Union 227A)
• Join Dr. Eric Hiatt of the Department of Geology as he discusses how petroleum deposits form and then explains how it is distributed throughout the world.  Learn why certain areas are rich in petroleum and discuss the role petroleum plays in geopolitics.
  
  
• 2:00-3:00pm - Study/Travel in Costa Rica! (Reeve 220)
• Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures faculty member Marco Mena will give a presentation on how students can travel to or study abroad in Costa Rica, either on a UW Oshkosh faculty-led program or on their own.
  
• 3:00-4:00pm - International Education Opportunities Available after Graduation (Reeve 213)
• College of Education and Human Services faculty member Courtney Bauder will give a presentation on the different opportunities related to international education that are available to graduating students. Presentation will include information on the Global Educator Graduate Certificate.
  
  
• 5:30-6:30pm - Using Technology Abroad (Reeve 213)
• UW Oshkosh student and entrepreneur Kevin Barta will provide valuable information on how to use and bring cell phones, computers and other technology abroad. He will also introduce a cheap way to make international calls via the internet.

• It is important to think about what you expect from a study abroad experience and then to look for a study abroad program which matches those expectations. Join Jenna Graff, International Programs Coordinator in the Office of International Education, as we explore answers to the following questions. How do my educational & career goals relate to my intended study abroad experience? What level of immersion am I REALLY looking for? What types of programs are available to me, and how do I find them? How do I get started?
• 7:00pm ? International Film Series (Halsey Science Center S107)
• Showing of "I?m Not Scared", rated R for disturbing images and language, directed by Gabriele Salvatores, Italy, 2003. A powerful drama about a young boy who finds another boy being held captive in a pit outside his village. He must help the boy stay alive, while also finding out what?s going on around him.

Thursday, November 17

• 2:00-3:00pm? Making your International Experience WORK for You (t.b.d.)
• Attend this workshop to learn how to make the most of your international experience on your resume and in job interviews.  Matt Mott and Angie Birschbach from Career Services, will discuss resume application of your time abroad, how to highlight the experiences and skills you have gained from your studies or travels when being interviewed and much more.  If you have an updated resume, please bring it with you for review from a "Resume Doctor".
  
  
• 3:30 - 4:30pm - Student Teaching Abroad Information Session (N/E 29)
• Mary Beth Petesch, Field Experience Director for the College of Education and Human Services, will hold an information session on how College of Education students can student teach abroad. Former students who have taught abroad will also attend.
  
• 6:00 - 8:30pm - International Business Club Film (Reeve 202)
• Showing of "Barber of Siberia" 1885. Jane arrives in Russia from America to assist Douglas McCracken, who has invented a steam-driven timber harvester named "The Barber of Siberia", in finding money for finishing his work. But an accidental meeting with Andrey Tolstoy, a cadet at Emperor School, becomes a sign of destiny. Having fallen in love with Jane, Andrey dares to stand in the way of his commander, General Radlov. The young man is exiled to Siberia on false charges of political crime. Housemaid Dunyasha follows him there.
• Twenty years later Jane will tell this story to her son, who looks very much like his remaining in Siberia father.

Friday, November 18

• 12:00 - 12:45pm - International Travel 101 (Reeve 207)
• There is so much to think about when preparing for international travel! Join staff from the Office of International Education for a brief overview of booking airline tickets, packing & luggage limits, flying internationally, jet lag, passports, visas, booking accommodations, communicating with people back home, international health insurance, vaccinations, U.S. State Department travel warnings & consular information sheets, registering with the U.S. Embassy, travel guides, and using public transportation abroad. Believe it or not, we can cover all of this and more in 45 minutes!
• 3:00 - 4:00pm - UW Oshkosh-Sponsored Faculty-led Study Abroad Information Meeting (Reeve 207)
• Information meetings offer an overview of each program in which students at the meeting have an interest and give detailed information on the application process, financial aid and the passport application process. Other meeting dates, locations and times are listed on the OIE events page. Study abroad destinations covered at the information meeting are listed on the OIE destinations page.
• 9:00pm ? 1:00am ? International Student/Study Abroad Party (Reeve Union Underground)
• This celebration features the DJ Audio Experience, a variety of international foods, international music and cultural activities. International students are encouraged to dress in traditional and/or ethnic clothing. Study/travel abroad guests are encouraged to bring trip photos & fun stories to share! Are you thinking about traveling or studying abroad? Join in the fun and learn about the different cultures and study abroad destinations represented at UW Oshkosh!
