THE TOUR: HIGHPOINTS:

RUSSIA: Moscow. In Moscow we will visit the Kremlin, the centuries-old center of the country's government.  Located in the heart of the Kremlin is the Armory Museum, repository of many remarkable items from the country's political and cultural history, ranging from Catherine the Great's carriages to the Faberge eggs the Romanov family presented to each other on special occasions.  The remarkable new Cathedral of Resurrection will also be on our itinerary as will the Tretiakov Art Gallery.

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia's second largest city and in many respects its second capital.  Here we will visit the Peter and Paul Fortress where many of the former rulers of Russia are buried and where many opponents of the tsarist government were imprisoned.  We will visit the remarkable St. Isaac's Cathedral, an architectural wonder as well as an important religious center.  We will take an excursion to the village of Pushkin to view and visit the astonishing Catherine's Palace. And, of course, we will spend some time in one of the great cultural centers of the world -- the Hermitage.

BUDAPEST, HUNGARY: Sightseeing on day one will include a visit to Parliament, Coronation Church, Hero?s Square and Gellert Hill. A boat trip on the Danube River is optional. On your second day, you will visit Castle Hill with the Royal Palace & Fisherman?s Bastion. Before departing, the group will be treated to a farewell dinner & folklore performance.

THE INSTRUCTOR:

Oliver Hayward, History Professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, has led many study tours to Russia, Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic in Eastern Europe.  He has taught Russian history in alternating years since he began teaching at UW-Parkside. Professor Hayward is frequently heard and read about in the local media on topics relating to events in Russia and Eastern Europe.  He has earned three distinguished teaching awards at UW-Parkside.  He will lecture on a variety of topics relating to Russia and Hungary including their history, geography, culture, society, and future prospects.  In addition, the lectures will be used to address many nuts-and-bolts issues the tour participants may encounter in the course of their trip in June.  These topics will include aspects of the etiquette of travel in Russia and Hungary (do's and don'ts), practical advice for long distance travel to countries you have never previously visited, and suggestions regarding souvenirs and items of historical interest, not to mention highpoints of the local cuisines.

COST:
The cost of the tour is $3,999* which will include round-trip international airfare, health insurance, CIS fees, domestic travels in Russia and in Hungary, lodging (double occupancy), scheduled excursions (you may choose to do others on your own), and all meals in Russia ? and probably breakfasts in Budapest where seeking out your own meals at lunch and supper will be a positive and enjoyable part of the experience. The application and a non-refundable deposit of $400 is due by: Friday, March 3rd, 2006.   Balance due by: April 1st, 2006.
