Course DescriptionAs an academic program, International Study Tour to China will provide the participants with an opportunity to study one of the oldest and most continuous civilizations in the world, and fathom the impact of modernization and globalization on traditional Chinese society and culture. The tour part of the program will last for 17 days during which the participants will visit Beijing, Qingdao, Xian, Guilin, Suzhou, and Shanghai. Carefully selected, these cities and historical sites will not only reveal to the visitors the deeply rooted Chinese traditions of political unity, Confucianism, and cultural and ethnic interactions, but also serve as a reminder of how China?s recent experiences with modernization and Westernization have changed the country?s physical appearance as well as the mentality of its people.
Before, during, and after the tour, the participants will be offered an opportunity to reflect on their experiences in China through writing a study report and journal entries. These academic activities and assignments are designed to expand students? international experiences, enable them to bring a new perspective to their classroom learning, and contribute to their liberal arts education.
Offered as HIST 371 (Study Tour Research), this 3-credit course can be taken to satisfy history major/minor elective, liberal arts, and international studies major/minor requirements.
Readings
J.A.G. Roberts, A Concise History of China (Cambridge, Massachusetts: Harvard University Press, 1999).
Jonathan D. Spence, The Chan?s Great Continent: China in Western Minds (New York: W.W. Norton & Co., 1999).
Damian Harper, National Geographic Traveler China (National Geographic Traveler, 2001).
Requirements & Assignments
To earn the three credits for this course, students must fulfill the following requirements:
· Attend three one-hour class sessions before the tour (time & location for these sections to be announced). In these sessions, Chinese history, culture, and Sino-Western relations will be discussed.
· Participate in tour activities in China and demonstrate your willingness and ability to appreciate cultural differences, and deal with those differences with sensibility and respect.
· Write a 4-page long (double-spaced typing with 11-point font) paper to answer the following question about Spence?s book The Chan?s Great Continent: China in Western Minds: What affected Western perceptions of China, Chinese culture, and Chinese revolutions from the 13th century to the 20th century? How have your experiences in China reinforced some of those perceptions, or made you critical of them? The due date for this assignment is June 30, 2006.
· Keep a travel journal titled I See the Chan?s Great Continent while traveling in China. There should be an entry for each day?s activities. The journal entries should not just list your tour activities. They should also be individual REFLECTIVE essays discussing how the tour activities deepen your understanding of Chinese society and culture. The instructor will check students? journal entries during the tour. The due date for this assignment is June 30, 2006.
· Select a study topic with the help of the instructor before the tour. Students are encouraged to select a topic related to their majors and Chinese history, culture, economic development, education, and so on. Once a topic is selected, they should produce a bibliography of about 10 books (excluding the two required readings) relevant to the selected study topic.
· Write a study report that should (1) identify the study topic and explain why the topic is chosen; (2) discuss how some of the authors, whose books are included in the bibliography, address the issues related to the chosen study topic; (3) explain how the tour itself facilitates the study of the issues related to the study topic; (4) include the bibliography. The report should be 10 pages long (not including the bibliography, double-spaced typing with 11-point font). The due date for the study report is July 31, 2006.
