Go ethnic at Overture

By Jacob Stockinger

February 10, 2006

Pick your ethnic group, art, activity or food -- from Chinese, Japanese, Hmong, Thai and Indian to Polish, Palestinian, Lithuanian, Italian, German, Spanish, Scottish, Swiss and Jewish and Jamaican -- and the odds are pretty good you will find it represented at this Sunday's free International Festival at the Overture Center.

"It doesn't get much press, but it's one of my favorite events," says Mary Lou Krase, the director of volunteer services for Overture.

She's not alone.

According to Krase, more than 7,000 people are expected to attend the 25th annual free event to be held throughout the Overture Center this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. More than two dozen free performances will be given, and a huge number of artisans and crafters as well as vendors of ethnic food will be found in the International Crafts Bazaar and the International Cafe.

Krase says she expects a record attendance this year in part because there is more space than ever before to use, now that the Capitol Theater is open.

"The participants love it," says Krase. "We have amateur performers who prepare all year long for this event. Otherwise they wouldn't have a chance to perform."

Krase also notes that many of the performers and food providers have been with the festival for its entire existence.

"The vendors love it. No one drops out unless they move out of the area," she says. "Plus, we get a lot of people from out of town who come for all the diversity."

And diversity is key.

New this year is a Russian accordion player. Also new is using the Wisconsin Studio for interactive workshops where people can learn to dance like a Scot or tango like an Argentinean.
