[International] Diversity & Leadership Conference 2/14/09: leadership team (GEN)

Dear International Listserv Members:

While the activity described below isn’t necessarily international in focus, the diversity element is a close match!  Please consider joining the team to help develop this opportunity!

Becoming a Diverse City……

                          ……………through sharing our stories

Diversity & Leadership Conference

Saturday, February 14, 2009

9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Reeve Memorial Union

The Student Leadership & Involvement Center is coordinating the 3rd annual diversity & leadership conference for UW Oshkosh students.

If you are interested in assisting with the planning & coordination of this campus program with other campus faculty, staff & students, please contact Sara Ann Suwalski (suwalsks@uwosh.edu / 424-3446).

The conference is a day that provides students with the opportunity to:

·         network with other UW Oshkosh students

·         participate in workshops in the areas of diversity, multiculturalism and leadership

·         be exposed to something different from their own experiences

·         challenge their thoughts, beliefs, and new ideas

·         share their stories and understand how others’ stories open the door to learning

What did students say about and learn at last year’s conference?

·         Made me really think about who I am and what I stand for and how that is reflected through what I do.

·         I want to fight the bias within my own marginalized community!

·         Opened my eyes to what I can do to improve as a leader.

·         Think critically about the topics you were always taught not to!

·         This is not just a local change we need to strive for but it's rather a global cause.

·         We must respect each other.

·         I have decided to be more active in making a difference with diversity issues.

·         Hate is not a family value.

·         Words have power, regardless of context.

·         Leaders are for the greater good of others; not for themselves.

The conference offers a unique day of learning for our students and each leaves with a new perspective or idea.  I hope you will consider sharing this involvement opportunity with colleagues  and students on campus.  We look forward to another wonderful year!

Thank you,

Sara Ann Suwalski
