Below is the announcement of the 2004 National Faculty Development Institute
on "Incorporating Japanese Studies into the Undergraduate Curriculum."
Please share this information with your faculty and academic administrators.

Thank you.

Japan Studies Institute 2004
San Diego State University
June 2-25, 2004
Application Deadline: December 15, 2003

Please inform your faculty of the availability of the one month intensive
National Faculty Development Institute on "Incorporating Japanese Studies
into the Undergraduate Curriculum." The program is designed for full-time
faculty without prior experience in Japanese studies who wish to incorporate
information about Japan into the undergraduate courses they teach. Academic
administrators and librarians who can impact undergraduate education are
also welcome. The program is only open to faculty and administrators at
AASCU member institutions.

The Institute, held on the San Diego State University campus, involves one
month of intensive seminars, lectures, readings, films, discussion groups
and cultural activities related to Japanese history, culture, literature,
government, business, language and education. While modern Japan serves as
the focus for the program, participants are provided with a firm foundation
in the pre-modern history and culture of Japan. Institute faculty include
scholars, representatives from the local Japanese business community,
artists, journalists, and government officials.

Japan is one of the most influential nations in the world today, with a
culture and history very different from our own. The Institute provides a
wonderful opportunity for your faculty to gain knowledge and insights that
will aid them in their professional development and in their teaching.

The Institute provides a $5,500 Sasakawa Fellowship for each participant
selected. That Fellowship includes the administrative and academic costs of
the Institute, campus housing, up to $600 for transportation and an $800
stipend for meals and other expenses. Institutions whose faculty are
accepted for the fellowships pay a partial tuition of $500.
