[Intl] Fwd: Fulbright Scholars from Egypt

Dear INTL Listserv Member:

Following is information on becoming a partner university and on requesting Egyptian scholars to teach at American universities. For more information, please contact the Fulbright Commission - Egypt directly.

Greetings from the binational Fulbright Commission in Egypt!

This is to share with you one of the Fulbright Commission's exchange programs that might be of interest to your institution. As we are in our second half-century of exchange activities, we would like to enhance lecturing and research opportunities in the United States for Egyptian scholars, as well as to extend our cooperation network with U.S. universities. Accordingly, we would like to invite you to join the Fulbright Commission-Egypt in this exciting international exchange venture that would enhance cross-cultural communication and mutual understanding. Following please find a brief description of the Fulbright-U.S. University Sponsored Grant and its financial pattern:

Objective:
The Fulbright - U.S. University Sponsored Grant is designed to enable partner universities in the U.S. to request Egyptian scholars to teach specific courses at the American universities; replace faculty members on sabbatical; serve as short-term guest professors; and introduce new fields e.g. Middle Eastern studies, in addition to conducting collaborative research. For information on all U.S./Egyptian Fulbright programs, please visit our web site at: www.fulbright-egypt.org <http://www.fulbright-egypt.org>

Benefits:
The program is of mutual benefit for both the Egyptian and American universities and for the Fulbright program as a whole. - Egyptian scholars are given a unique opportunity to teach, conduct research and to get a first hand experience about the American higher education system. - U.S. host universities are provided with a qualified scholar to teach courses in a specific discipline needed/requested by the university in addition to having an international visitor with diverse knowledge and experiences that he/she could share with the university's faculty, students and local communities.

Past Co-Sponsoring Universities:
For the past five years, the Commission succeeded in establishing co-sponsored agreements with Georgia State University, Cornell University, University of Arizona-Tuscon, Wake Forest University, University of Richmond and the University of Maryland.

Commitment:
The commitment of the U.S. partner university ranges from one semester to three academic years or even more. Funding will be shared among the U.S. host institutions, the Fulbright Commission and the Egyptian universities. The co-sponsoring pattern for the past five years has been as follows: - The U.S. host institution: covers no less than 51% of the monthly maintenance allowance for scholars set at $2,900/month; - The Fulbright Commission: covers a settling-in allowance of $500, a professional allowance ranging from $400-750 (depending on the grant duration) , a cultural allowance of $500, an excess baggage allowance ranging from $ 450-650 (depending on the grant duration) and any portion of the monthly maintenance allowance not provided by the host institution, not to exceed 49%.
                - The Egyptian university: covers air tickets.
If you have any inquiries/concerns regarding the above pattern, it would be our pleasure to discuss them.

Selection Process:
The Fulbright Commission's objective selection process, ensures the selection of high caliber scholars from Egyptian universities. This is evidenced in the first-rate research work conducted by Egyptian Fulbright grantees and in the increasing rate by which the host institutions have chosen to cost-share grant extensions.

The Commission's role: a) announcing, distributing and collecting applications; b) conducting preliminary screening and convening binational nomination panels, thus matching applicants with requests; c) sending dossiers of the short-listed candidates to the U.S. host institution for review and final selection/approval. Note: A language report is added to the documents requested from the applicant to evaluate/ensure his/her level of English language competency, in addition to passing through the same peer review and interview process as the regular Fulbright senior scholars.

The U.S. host institution's role: a) deciding the duration of the grant (one or two semesters); b) providing detailed information about the requested fields of interest prior to announcing the grant in Egypt; c) reviewing the dossiers of the nominated applicants and sending the approval/disapproval to the Commission within reasonable time, ideally one month, from the date of receipt of the dossiers.

Pls feel free to share the above with any of your colleagues who have an interest in international exchange and/or Egypt. Should you have any questions or require further information, please do not hesitate to contact me via e-mail at sabbadi@bfce.eun.eg. I look forward to hearing from you and to the possiblity of working with you on this timely/needed opportunity for international institutional cooperation.

Sincerely,

Safaa Abbadi
