[Intl] Europe in Focus: Opportunities in an Enlarged Europe

Dear INTL Listserv & Globalization Committee:

The UW-Madison CIBER is sponsoring the upcoming “Europe in Focus: Opportunities in an Enlarged Europe” program. The historic accession of 10 new member states into the European Union in May 2004 created a single market of almost 500 million people and holds promise for greater stability in the region, increased trade through new markets, consolidation of regulations and barriers and a strengthening of the EU’s influence in the world. However, there are concerns about reforms in the new member states and the ability of their legal and administrative bodies to adequately enforce and interpret EU laws.

Terry Dittrich, international sales manager, Spancrete Machinery Corporation, and Ken Wasylik, partner, E.M. Wasylik Associates LLP, will provide an overview of the opportunities and challenges that European enlargement creates for U.S. business. These panelists will share examples, best practices and real-life strategies from their experience growing sales, developing distribution channels and creating strategic alliances in Eastern European markets. Greg Shaffer, director of the UW-Madison European Union Center and professor of law, will present introductory remarks and moderate the discussion.

The program will be held from 3:30-5:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 9, at the Fluno Center on the UW-Madison campus. The program fee is $20 and registration by September 3 is required. For complete event and registration information, please visit: http://research.bus.wisc.edu/ciber/iom/ciberevents.asp?eid=426.

This program is co-sponsored by the UW-Madison Center for World Affairs and the Global Economy (WAGE), the UW-Madison Center for European Studies (CES), the UW-Madison European Union Center (EUC) and the Madison International Trade Association (MITA). Please contact Sachin Tuli, CIBER assistant director, at 608-265-4938 or tuli@bus.wisc.edu, with any questions.

Thank you.
