Application materials are available for the 2005 Policy-Connect
Collaborative Research Grants Program.
The Policy-Connect Collaborative Research Grants Program, which now
encompasses the cross-regional John J. and Nancy Lee Roberts Fellowship,
supports cutting-edge collaborative research on specific topics and
regions each year. IREX expects to award four grants this year for
projects up to 12 months in length. One grant will be awarded for
research on Southeast Europe, two grants for research on Eurasia, and
one grant for research with a cross-regional focus. Collaborative teams
may be comprised of no more than three US scholars. Upon completion of
the project, scholars will be requested to present their research
findings at a Policy Forum at the US Department of State and to write a
short policy paper.
This year applications will be accepted for research only on the
following topics and regions:
* Eurasia: HIV/AIDS, organized crime, anti-terrorism
* Southeast Europe: Economic development, human trafficking,
women's political participation
* Cross-regional: Post-Soviet relations between Eurasia and the
Middle East/North Africa and South Asia
Technical Eligibility Requirements: Applicants and collaborators must
* be a US citizen or permanent resident (green card holder) of the
US for three consecutive years prior to application;
* submit a research proposal on a topic and region listed above;
* hold a PhD or other professional terminal graduate degree (MA,
MS, MFA, MBA, MPA, MLIS, MPH, JD, MD);
* not be currently pursuing a degree;
* submit a complete application package by the deadline;
* have fulfilled all requirements from previous IREX grants;
* not be a current IREX employee or consultant or their immediate
family members (spouses, parents, children, and siblings) as they are
not eligible to compete in any IREX-administered grant programs, either
as individuals or as the responsible party representing an institutional
applicant.
Eligible Countries of Research Focus:
* Southeast Europe: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria,
Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Romania, and Serbia and Montenegro
* Eurasia: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan,
Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and
Uzbekistan
* Cross-regional: Countries of Eurasia (see above) and Algeria,
Afghanistan, Bahrain, Egypt, India, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon,
Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, United
Arab Emirates, West Bank/Gaza, and Yemen
Eligible Expenses: Applicants may request up to $30,000 to cover
expected expenditures.
