Joint Casa de las Américas/Common Ground Cuban Studies Project this summer
in Cuba for graduate students and academic professionals in the fields of
Afro-Caribbean, Latin American, Cuban and Afro-Cuban studies, and other
related fields.
Led by Afro-Cuban poet and writer Pedro Pérez Sarduy and hosted by the
prestigious Cuban institution, Casa de las Américas, research participants
will receive background briefings from Casa specialists and assistance in
pursuing a variety of topics of research interest. Now in its second
year, the Cuban Studies Research Project this year gives special emphasis
to the ways in which the African diaspora weave threads throughout Cuban
and Caribbean history, literature and the arts, as well as its politics,
spiritual life, and social relations.
Dates: May 21 to 28, 2005 (extended stay possible)
Cost: $1925 in double and $2150 in single room occupancy
plus U.S. academic fee of $200. Cost includes: RT air from Miami to
Havana; background briefings on Cuba and topic of research; research
assistance, site visits and meeting arrangement; accommodations in
downtown hotel; breakfast daily; welcome and farewell dinners; meeting and
transfers between airport and hotel; group transportation for appropriate
visits; limited translation assistance; entry visa; medical/evacuation
insurance; service fees and assistance. Not included: Additional meals,
airport taxes ($50 in Miami and $25 in Havana); tips and gratuities.
Requirements: All participants must qualify for professional academic
research
under General License of the U.S. Treasury Department, Office of Foreign
Assets Control, or hold a specific license from the Treasury Department or
their own institution. Graduate students may participate expressly in
pursuit of their graduate degree and under specific license and
authorization of their institution. Participants must submit a brief (2-3
paragraph) summary of their research topic to be accepted to the program
and must sign a Travel Affidavit affirming that they have read and
understand the US regulations and do indeed fall under the appropriate
category for full time research activity in Cuba.
