[Intl] International Internship in Japan Opp for Students

Dear Faculty & Staff:

Do you know a student who would like to complete an internship in Japan?  If so, please read on!!!

I do not typically work with internships abroad, but this looks like a great opportunity and I'd like to make sure that a UW Oshkosh student gets a shot at this!  UW Oshkosh has had a relationship with Guy Healy, Japan, a culture-exchange consulting agency based in Nagasaki and Fukuoka, Japan, for over 15 years.  Guy Healy, Japan will offer internships for the first time this coming fall 2005.

Information on the internship opportunity is provided at
Internship Announcement: http://www.uwosh.edu/oie/pdf/GHJ1.pdf
Internship Details: http://www.uwosh.edu/oie/pdf/GHJ2.pdf
Application Form: http://www.uwosh.edu/oie/pdf/GHJ3.pdf
This coming fall semester, Guy Healy, Japan will be offering 2-3 internship opportunities, which he is advertising through study abroad offices on three campuses.  Our students may apply but will need a strong recommendation from UW Oshkosh before being considered.  If you have a student you would like to recommend, please share this information.  Students with interests and skills in one or more of the following areas will be considered: Interns also need to have prior experience with kids and an interest in learning the Japanese language.  Prior experience tutoring or conversing with non-native English speakers would be a plus.

Students should know that this is not a paid internship.  In exchange for the work interns do in Japan for GHJ, GHJ will cover expenses such as airfare, accommodations and two meals per day.  That said, most internship programs run by universities as part of an academic program charge students a fee to participate and be placed, with no compensation by the company.  There are paid work opportunities for recent U.S. graduates in Japan through competitive placement organizations.  UW Oshkosh will not charge a fee for internship placement

Guy Healy, Japan would prefer that Oshkosh students who have not graduated be enrolled for internship credit at UW Oshkosh if possible.  UW Oshkosh students may enroll for Interdisciplinary Studies 399, provided a complete project proposal is worked out in advance.  Other course enrollment options may also be available to students.  Students who will graduate in May will not need to enroll in any course at UW Oshkosh.  Students enrolled for credit will need to pay tuition at UW Oshkosh. The application deadline is May 2 (I apologize for the late notice, but we just received this information late last week and had to work out a few issues!).  Students can bring completed applications to the Office of International Education in Dempsey 337 anytime before that date.  If you know that a student will apply, please email me with the student's name and email address so that I can follow up, if necessary.
