From the Office of Grants and Faculty Development

Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Offers German
        Chancellor Scholarship Program

 Deadline: October 31, 2005

 The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation
 ( http://www.humboldt-foundation.de/en/ ) awards twenty
German Chancellor Scholarships annually to young
professionals in the private, public, not-for-profit,
 cultural, and academic sectors.

The program is open to citizens of the United States and
the Russian Federation, with ten scholarships designated
for representatives of each nation. The German Chancellor
Scholarship Program sponsors individuals who demonstrate
the potential to strengthen ties between Germany and their
own country through their profession or studies.

The scholarship provides for a stay of one year in Germany
for professional development, study, or research.
Applicants design individual projects specific to Germany
and decide at which institutions to pursue them.
Successful candidates have come from such fields as
government, social and policy sciences, law, journalism,
 communications, management, finance, economics,
architecture, public service, humanities, arts, and
environmental affairs.  Applications from the natural
sciences may be considered if the topic has a social or
 humanistic dimension.

The program begins September 1 and lasts twelve months.  It
is preceded by language classes taught in Germany.  Monthly
stipends range from EUR 2,000 to 3,500 and allowances are
available for accompanying family members, travel expenses,
 and German language instruction.

Candidates must be citizens of the United States or the
Russian Federation, possess a bachelor's degree, and be
under 35 years of age by the start of the award. Prior
knowledge of the German language is not a prerequisite.

Applications and information for U.S. and Russian
Federation applicants may be obtained from the foundation's
 Web site.
