[Philclub] Meritocracy



Marshall, UWO Philosohpy Club:

The last time we spoke, I encouraged you to ask the Philosophy Club to 
consider bringing Steven Durlauf, professor of economics at UW-Madison, to 
discuss meritocracy and equal opportunity. He is co-editor of _Meritocracy and 
Economic Inequality_, which is a critical look at the concept of equal 
opportunity and distributive justice. Kenneth Arrow 
<http://www-econ.stanford.edu/faculty/arrow.html>, 1972 Nobel Prize winner in 
economics, is also a co-editor of that book. It would be even better to bring 
Arrow to UWO, I guess, but that would probably be a lot more difficult. I 
don't even know what Durlauf's position is on the issue of meritocracy or 
equal opportunity, but I am sure he can talk about them articulately. That's 
enough for me.
