Re: [Plone-developers] Does HTML5 Really Beat Flash? The Surprising Results of New Tests

I'll chime in here also.

HTML5's power isn't limited to it's video tag support. It will also provide a canvas tag that will be accelerated by the graphics chip and provide things for games, and rich animation. There are some demonstrations online using it. I can be just as awesome as flash; however, there is no IDE out that can help facilitate making things with it. I doubt it'll take long for it to happen though. The power of using _javascript_ to do rich animation is very appealing.

It's still years down the road though especially with out long standards take to be fully adopted. Not to mention we're still dealing with IE6 users! They won't be seeing video tag or canvas any time soon.

I'm on the down-with-Flash bandwagon as much as down with anyone, I
choose JS/JQuery UI/etc. over it any day.  But as Brian says we're a
long way from HTML5 video being a real competitor (the browser vendors
couldn't even decide on a single universal codec), let alone its
supporting browsers having a market share approaching that of Flash.
Even YouTube hasn't entirely gone over, HTML5 is opt-in only and not
supported for videos with ads.

Safari) support it.  You're right, there probably is a place for Flash for specific things that can't be done otherwise, but it's not a good idea to make it a central part of your web site if you want people to see your web site with the leading mobile devices that don't support Flash and likely never will.

Flash is used for more than just video.. you cannot make a game or an interactive animation in HTML5 in order to illustrate a point or an idea. Now Im all for HTML5 for video. And hopefully ppl wont be soo slow to upgrade their browsers in order to make use of it (were still dealing with crappy IE6.. what.. 10 years later??).. HTML5 hasn't even been finalized yet. And in addition its going to take years for full implementation. They've been working on the HTML5 specifications since like 2004.
