Dear WISPIRG Student Chapters supporter,

Please help Southeast Asia!

On Sunday, December 26, 2004, the most powerful earthquake recorded in forty years caused 30-45 foot tidal waves that struck land, destroying coastal towns in India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and many other countries. More than 150,000 deaths have been confirmed and a million additional people remain missing, homeless, and without adequate food and water. The World Health Organization warns that the number of casualties will drastically increase as epidemic diseases set in.

Americans are rising to the occasion, providing much needed relief. Many of you have asked how students can help. We have some suggestions for you.

First, please join the relief efforts we are organizing on campus! As school starts back up again, we're organizing many different fundraisers, such as "Skip-A-Meal" programs, where students can "skip" one or more of their dining hall meals and direct the funds towards the relief efforts. You can volunteer to help organize these events.

Second, we're asking everyone to please donate as much as you can to assist with the relief efforts. Materials goods are helpful, but it is estimated that one dollar in cash is worth ten dollars of material goods. We suggest that you direct your donation to Oxfam, an excellent international organization that has been on the front lines of poverty for years.

To make a donation or to volunteer, visit our website:

Your donation to Oxfam will go directly to provide nutritious food rations, water storage tanks, sanitation systems, and temporary latrines, blankets, cooking pots, and shelter to homeless families, as well as efforts to avert fatal epidemics such as typhoid and cholera.

This is an important time to show the world the generosity of American students. Let's do everything we can to help the victims of this disaster during their time of need.

Sincerely,

Ellen Montgomery
