Steve,
Oxfam America is dedicated to creating lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and social injustice. One of the most effective ways to create lasting solutions is to support Fair Trade. Fair Trade helps family farmers in poor countries gain access to international markets and get a fair price for their products.
United Students for Fair Trade is a collaboration of students working toward economic justice through the promotion of Fair Trade products, principles, and policies. I am writing to invite you to the United Students for Fair Trade 2005 National Convergence, which will take place February 18-21 in Chicago, Illinois.
The convergence is geared toward students who want to work on global issues with other motivated students. For information about the Convergence, visit www.usft.org.
Attendees will have the chance to:
- Hear coffee and banana producers from six different countries share their experiences;
- Learn organizing skills in dozens of workshops facilitated by experienced organizers in the U.S. and abroad, including Oxfam, Global Exchange, Coop America, and others; and
- Network with over 200 students and youth movement leaders from around the world.
This is a unique opportunity to get more involved in positive social change. To register for the Convergence, please visit www.usft.org.
Students who attended the 2004 USFT Convergence in Santa Cruz, California were so motivated that they have spent the year changing the face of the Fair Trade Movement, including:
- Converting a number of campuses to Fair Trade including MIT, UMASS Boston, Arizona State;
- Developing coordinated national Fair Trade campaigns around coffee, cocoa, crafts, and domestic farmworker rights;
- Diving deeper into critical questions behind Fair Trade; and
- Traveling and working in collaboration with cooperative communities around the world.
We need you and your friends to join us and carry on the amazing Fair Trade energy this year! Please visit www.usft.org to register by January 25th, or forward this message to students who might be interested. If you have further questions after you visit the site, please email me at: sharris@oxfamamerica.org
We'll see you in Chicago!!!
