[Seac] Why farmed animals suffer so in US
If you ever want to know why farmed animals are in such a sorry state in this country, why they are so much better off in Europe, and why it is legally so extremely hard to help them out of it, I suggest reading chapter 9 of this book:
_Animal Rights: Current Debates and New Directions_
by Sunstein and Nussbaum, Oxford University Press, 2004
<http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0195152174/ref=sib_dp_pt/102-0095136-4512128#reader-link>.
That whole chapter is also available online, and you can print it out from there to read it (be patient, it loads very slowly). It provides the best explanation, in my opinion, and I have read a lot on this subject - and I have read a lot about it:
Chapter 9
"Foxes in the Hen House"
by David Wolfson and Mariann Sullivan.
