[WAC-list] Anti-Choice Bill Moves to the Senate - Help Stop It!

Anti-choice Senate leader Bill Frist is determined to score political points
with the right-wing's conservative base by pushing for a Senate vote on the
deceptive "Unborn Victims of Violence Act" before Congress recesses.

It should come as no surprise that anti-choice lawmakers support the so-called
Unborn Victims of Violence Act, which is intended to threaten the legal basis
of the right to choose. Anti-choice Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) has conceded the
bill's true purpose: "They say it undermines abortion rights. It does."

What is disturbing is that anti-choice legislators are exploiting real human
tragedies for their own political gain. Nobody disputes the fact that any
criminal act that robs women and their families of a hoped-for future child is
tragic and intolerable. But instead of passing consensus legislation to
punish such crimes and protect a woman's right to protect herself and her
pregnancy from violence, this bill's sponsors are co-opting this important
issue to advance their own far-right agenda.

Subject: Please Oppose S.1019

Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],

As a pro-choice American, I write to urge your strong opposition to S.1019,
the "Unborn Victims of Violence Act." This legislation is a deceptive attack
on a woman's right to choose disguised as an effort to protect pregnant women
from violence.

Violence against women, especially pregnant women, is unacceptable. I firmly
support a woman's right to have a family when she chooses - and any criminal
act that robs her of a hoped-for future child is tragic and intolerable. Such
attacks must be vigorously prosecuted and severely punished, and women's
rights advocates have long urged Congress to pass laws to do just that.

Lawmakers could enact a number of serious and meaningful laws that prevent and
punish violence and provide services to women and their families. Rather than
supporting such common-sense measures, anti-choice lawmakers instead are
promoting the Unborn Victims of Violence Act. Supporters of the bill claim
their goal is to protect pregnant women from acts of violence, yet their true
intent is to undermine Roe v. Wade. Even sponsors admit that their real
purpose is to undermine a woman's right to choose.

Because the "Unborn Victims of Violence Act" does nothing to help solve the
real problem of violence against women, I urge you to reject it and instead
pursue avenues that seek to protect women without undermining their right to
choose.

Sincerely,

Carolyn Kirchhoff
