GSF seeks to support a formative experience abroad for the recipient, who also must share this experience with others upon his or her return ? ideally, with multiple audiences and varied media. We are particularly interested in funding the study of strategically significant countries and languages. Applicants must be US citizens and currently enrolled full-time and in good academic standing in an accredited secondary or postsecondary institution. Among the most significant selection criteria are academic performance (as indicated in courses, grades, recommendations, and other achievements), program merit, outreach potential, and financial need. If you are interested in working with German doctoral students on research projects in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Geology and Physics, please consider the following. German language skills are not required for most positions but would be helpful to manage everyday life outside of the laboratory. The working language will generally be English. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) - in cooperation with science organizations in North America and Germany? is pleased to invite undergraduate students from the US and Canada in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth Sciences and engineering to apply for a summer research internship in Germany. RISE summer placements take place with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany. The RISE interns are matched with a doctoral student whom they assist and who will also serve as their mentor. This program is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology as part of the European Recovery Program (ERP). This year, the searchable RISE database contains a record total of 505 internship openings at the top research institutions (e.g. Max-Planck and Fraunhofer Institutes) and universities in Germany. Approx 150 placements will be made. DAAD will provide a monthly scholarship of Euro 615 (approx US$800) for a period of 6 weeks to 3 months (pro-rated depending on length of stay) between the middle of May and August 2007. DAAD will also provide health insurance and accident and personal/private liability insurance. The host institution will assist the intern in finding reasonably-priced housing for the duration of the internship. The scholarship will not cover international travel costs. The application deadline is February 2, 2007. Register online to access the internship offers at www.daad.de/rise/en/4.html If you are accepted to participate, please let me know! I can work with you on preparing for travel to Germany.
