On April 19 at 4 PM, David Marples, Professor of History and Classics at the University of Alberta, will be speaking about Belarus in the Distance Education Room in Polk Library (Polk 116A). This event is co-sponsored by the History Club and Club Nippon.Sandwiched between Russia and the expanding European Union, Belarus is in a contradictory position. As a former Soviet republic, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko is drawn toward historic ties with Russia and Vladimir Putin. On the other hand, the economic boom in Central and East Europe pulls Belarus toward the West. This country, thus, lies at a crossroads. Its decisions may shape the direction of European politics for decades. David Marples is one of the leading scholars working on Belarus today and has published a number of books on the topic, including Prospects for Democracy in Belarus (2006), Belarus: A Denationalized Nation (1999), and Belarus: From Soviet Rule to Nuclear Catastrophe (1996). This lecture is part of the UW Madison Center for East Europe and Central Asia lecture series and will be an interactive videoconference.
