We are hoping to have a monthly column in the A/T, through which students can tell about their exciting experiences, and encourage others to study abroad as well. We will have a new article, from a new student (and hopefully a new location) each month. Since we would like to have a few columns ready to go at the beginning of this semester, we are now asking that you submit a column via email, if you choose to write one by Friday, January 26. You can still submit columns after that, but the sooner you turn it in, the more likely it is that your column will be published. The column should be 400-500 words, and should focus on the unique experience you had abroad. Please spend time developing your story, as the A-T won't print generic columns that start "Last semester I studied abroad in Europe and had the time of my life." The first paragraph should draw the reader in with a unique experience, perhaps something shocking or life-changing (positive or negative); something you could never have experienced in the United States. The column should focus around these unique individual experiences that you had. Some examples might be, "I was really embarrassed to find out that the items I brought from home to donate to a poor Chinese elementary school had 'Made in China' written on the back of them." Or, "After being abroad for two months, I really needed a haircut. I thought I knew Spanish pretty well, until they starting asking me questions about how I want it cut. We never learned 'layered' or 'curly' in my Spanish class at home!" Feel free to draw from your journal entries as well. Also, the columns should include some negative experience from the trip. If you had your luggage stolen and had to buy new clothes right away this should be included. The A-T staff will have a hard time believing you spent time in a foreign country and didn't have any negative experiences. The OIE and Advance Titan staff will review all articles before their submission, and reserve the right to not publish an article, or to ask that it be modified if it is not deemed appropriate or is too similar to a previous article. All students who have studied abroad are able to submit an article to the OIE, so if you have a friend who may be interested as well, please have them contact us. We look forward to receiving your submission!
