Our application deadline has passed, but there are a few seats left in the following courses for latecomers! * Cinematic Rome (upper level COMM elective) * Baroque Art and Culture (upper level HU elective) Join students from our exchange partner, the University of New Brunswick (UNB) in Fredericton and Saint John, Canada, students from other Canadian Universities and at five students from UW Oshkosh to become a temporary citizen of Rome! Learn to appreciate and explore the art and culture in this city as faculty from UNB guide you through the layers of history. Let the museums, churches, archaeological sites and Rome itself be your classroom! Rome is a city of layers, both physically and historically. As you stroll through the centre of this important world city, you can't help but notice that the structures of ancient Rome, Renaissance and Baroque Rome and modern Rome are intertwined, just as each period in the history of this city has had profound influences on the very different periods which follow. An overview of each of these programs, including course information and program fees, is available at http://www.uwosh.edu/oie/LROME.html For the remaining seats, applications will be accepted first-come, first-served. For more information on the application process, please visit http://www.uwosh.edu/oie/faqs.html. If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at oie at uwosh.edu, call us at 424-0775 or stop by to see us in Dempsey 146! STUDY with African students affiliated with Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) near the capital of Kampala. ANALYZE the impact of globalization on an African society. EXPERIENCE the relationship between the developed and developing world first-hand! This interdisciplinary study abroad seminar is designed to study the socio-cultural, economic, historical and geo-political implications of globalization in an African country. There is heavy emphasis upon concepts, issues, and trends in globalization. An analysis of the impact of globalization on the people and all social institutions of an African Country is an important part of the seminar. The core of the seminar is a lecture series given by experts in the fields of history, politics, geography, economics, development philosophies, social anthropology, and the arts and humanities. Lecturers are drawn from Uganda Martyrs University (UMU), Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) as well as from among practitioners in the many fields of development, including nongovernmental and private voluntary organizations working and conducting research in the country. Two weeks of Seminar are broken into modules in which students concentrate on their studies in some of the following areas: Development in Practice, Health Care, Education and Human Services, Information Technology, Culture and Environment, Trade and Investment, International Business, Agriculture and Food Security, Politics and Democracy, International Finance and Commerce all in terms of the effects of globalization on Uganda. The first of these weeks is spent working with leading scholars at UMU and touring sites in Kampala, and Jinja. The second week is spent working with leading scholars at MUST and at selected field study sites around Mbarara town and in the rural area. These modules enable students to increase their range of in-country contacts, deepen their understanding of globalization and development issues, and have further access to scholars and campus life. Educational excursions to local historical, cultural, and development sites complement students' 90 hours of class work. Members of the Oshkosh Community are also encouraged to use this opportunity to tour Uganda, that Churchill once called, "The Pearl of Africa." Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) is located in a rural area, a two-hour drive from Kampala, Uganda's Capital. UMU was founded in 1993 and offers courses to approximately 1000 full-time, part-time and distance-learning students from around Africa and the Netherlands. UMU offers coursework through the Institute of Ethics and Development Studies, the Faculty (College) of Business Administration and Management, the Faculty (College) of Science, the Faculty (College) of Agriculture, the Faculty (College) of Building Technology Architecture, and the Centre for Extra-Mural Studies and Distance-Learning. Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) was founded in 1989. Courses are offered in the areas of Medicine, Surgery, Science Education and Development Studies. In addition, MUST has established two institutes: the Institute of Tropical Forest Conservation based in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park for education and research in Tropical Forest Biology and Conservation, and the Institute of Computer Science. The Academic programs at MUST are intended to be tailored towards the Government effort of solving Uganda's economic problems by producing the skilled manpower in Science, Technology and managerial sciences that should participate in determining the policies, plan programmes and implement projects that are essential for sustained integrated economic growth and development. Updated information is now available for this program at http://www.uwosh.edu/oie/uganda.html Program fees are currently estimated at $2,160 - $2,610 plus airfare (approximately $1,800) based on 8-12 participants. There are no additional tuition costs. The more students who sign up for this trip, the lower the cost per student will be. You can help lower your cost to study abroad by recruiting friends and classmates to join you in this experience! For information on what these program fees cover and for an estimate of other expenses associated with the trip (e.g. passport fees, meal costs, etc.), see http://www.uwosh.edu/oie/uganda.html#costs&grants For this program, applications will be accepted first-come, first-served either until the program is full or until the application deadline, whichever occurs first.
