She will be on campus Wednesday, November 14 at 8:00 pm in Reeve Union (Room 227) to tell her story and speak on the Cambodian Genocide. Please encourage colleagues and students to attend. Book sale and signing will follow her presentation. Event is $2.00 at the door for faculty, staff and general public. Student admission is free with Titan ID card. More about the program: Loung Ung will tell her story of how her family was forced out of the Cambodian city in a mass evacuation to the countryside. Three years later the Khmer Rouge had killed Loung's parents and two of her siblings and she was forced to train as a child soldier. In 1980, she and her older brother escaped by boat to Thailand, where they spent five months in a refugee camp and later relocated to the United States. Loung returned to Cambodia fifteen years after her escape for a memorial service for the victims of the Khmer Rouge genocide and was shocked and saddened to learn that twenty of her relatives had been killed. This realization compelled her to devote herself to justice and reconciliation in her homeland. This forwarded message does not, however, represent a recommendation of this organization by the Office of International Education or the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, as the UW Oshkosh OIE does not complete assessments of volunteer organizations. Last year several students stopped in our office after the presentations for more information, so I thought I would make this information available to everyone in advance this year (at the end of this message). If you happen to apply to this program, please let our office know. We love to hear where our students are going and what they're doing when they're abroad! _____ Interested in travelling overseas? Do you want to make a difference this summer? International Student Volunteers is offering summer programs to all students that are interested in travelling to Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica (Central America), Dominican Republic (Caribbean), Ecuador (South America) and Thailand (South East Asia). ISV is selecting students from all over America, Canada, Europe and the UK to participate in our volunteer work and adventure travel programs! Our volunteer work projects are conservation and community development based. If selected, you will travel with a group of students to one of ISV's designated countries for an amazing summer experience lasting anywhere from two weeks to three months, depending on your preferences. If this sounds exciting to you, I would like to strongly encourage you to come to the information meeting we're having this: Thursday 8th November, in room 227C of Reeves Memorial Union, every hour on the hour: 9am, 10am, 11am, 12, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm, and 5pm! University: University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh I look forward to seeing you there as I would love to meet you personally. This meeting is going to be informal and informative. There is absolutely no commitment whatsoever as it's an information meeting only. We'll be talking about the ISV Summer Programs for 2008 and you can ask us any questions you might have. Some exciting things we'll cover in the information meeting are: * Offsetting costs through tax deductible sponsorship donations from the community * How you can tailor your program to last anywhere from two weeks to three months * Optional excursions including: Spanish language/Latin dancing lessons (Spanish speaking countries only) and an amazing optional trip to Fiji or the Galapagos Islands! Plus, we'll be talking about the fantastic experiences thousands of students had last year on our program! Bring along any friends you feel might be interested, as you're able to travel with your friends even if they're not students at this university! Furthermore, I'd like to encourage you to get online and check out the ISV website: www.isvonline.com to find out additional information. This is an incredible opportunity to travel with a purpose this summer. We look forward to meeting you at the campus information meeting! Financial Aid requires a student to be full time, which means that a student would need to earn 3.5 credits over the summer to be eligible. Academic credit is offered through ISV by way of the University of Santa Barbara in California. Unfortunately, the transcripts issued are through a college of extended learning and are not official transcripts, which means that UW Oshkosh (and most U.S. universities) won't be able to use them to transfer in academic credit. The only option for UW Oshkosh students would be to earn UW Oshkosh credit - possibly through an internship course which you would set up directly with your major department (if appropriate). However, enrollment in 3.5 or more credits at UW Oshkosh over the summer will generate a tuition bill here. Therefore, it may or may not be to your advantage to enroll in coursework to qualify for financial aid. Adventure Tourism You should be aware that safety standards in foreign countries are not always as strict or as strictly enforced as they are in the U.S. Things you may take for granted, like lifejackets in boats or backup equipment for sports like bungee jumping, may not be required or provided. It is your responsibility to check out both your program provider and the adventure company offering the experience. Read all waivers carefully and be sure to have international health insurance which covers high risk activities, emergency evacuation, medical reunion and repatriation of remains. By preparing in advance and choosing carefully, you can have a safe and adventurous trip!!! It is home to the GEN Living & Learning Center in Senegal that hosts students from Living Routes (www.livingroutes.org). On this semester program, U.S. and local students take classes together and focus on cross-cultural teamwork in sustainable ecovillage development, as part of the UNESCO Decade of Education for Sustainable development (DESD). Living Routes offers programs accredited by the University of Massachusetts Amherst in a number of countries around the world, including semester programs in Senegal, Scotland, India, and Israel. Living Routes programs are both academic and experiential, as is GEN Senegal's Living & Learning Center. They challenge students to grow on academic, professional and personal levels. Students and faculty together create a learning community within the living communities of ecovillages. These remarkable educational environments facilitate real transformative intellectual and personal development. The Living & Learning Center currently is seeking applications for a bilingual Student Coordinator and Program Assistant for the Living Routes program in the capital city of Dakar, Senegal, West Africa. Responsibilities for this position include assisting in the coordination of a group of mixed American and Senegalese students (in conjunction with other members of the staff), acting as liaison between the Living Routes Senegal program and the Living Routes office in the United States, organizing logistics for the program (including weekend excursions, language classes, visiting presenters, village visits, budget expenses, etc), participating in the interview and selection process of Senegalese students, and facilitating communication between the staff and students within the program. Interns receive living expenses covering room and board with an experienced local homestay family during the first six months. They will be expected to cover round-trip airfare to/from Senegal, health insurance, as well as other personal costs. Interns who stay for a second six months receive a modest salary, increased for those who remain for a third or fourth semester. Candidates who have studied or worked in Senegal previously have an option of taking over the pre-furnished apartment of our previous intern, who is leaving for graduate school after a year with the program. Successful candidate will be: - fully fluent in French and English (with basic Wolof skills preferred) - probably American or Canadian with experience in North American university education - familiar with Senegal and Senegalese culture or with other previous Africa experience - experienced in management and/or team-building, - a strong writer and editor - able to manage multiple projects/tasks simultaneously - extremely comfortable working in a self-directed environment - able and willing to work independently - flexible and eager to work in a cross-cultural environment - available for at least 6 months (through June, 2008) Preferred candidates will have previous experience working with grassroots organizations, prior extended travel experience, and will be willing to stay for a full year, with modest salary support from the program during the second six months. This is a highly competitive position and an excellent opportunity to work in a dynamic environment of American and Senegalese colleagues. GEN Senegal's prior interns include Fulbright scholars and researchers, undergraduate and graduate students from such institutions as Cornell, School for International Training, Beloit College, and Columbia University, and the University of Montreal.. The position will be open until November 30, as our GEN Senegal is looking to fill the post with the best-suited individual as soon as possible. This posting will be removed within a week once position is filled. Application instructions: Interested applicants should send a resume or CV (including references) in French and English to Marian Zeitlin mzeitlin2002 at yahoo.com, Ousmane Aly Pame oalypame at hotmail.com, Daniel Greenberg Daniel at livingroutes.org, and Anne Koplinka-Loehr annekoplinka at gmail.com , our outgoing student coordinator.
