Please note that this program is already over 50% filled. It is quite possible that this program will fill to the maximum capacity BEFORE the application deadline. If you plan to graduate at the end of fall semester and you need this program/course, apply now! Examine macroeconomic policies and development projects and their impact on the environment and on indigenous peoples. Study urban sprawl, pollution, and migration to cities in Lima, which stand in sharp contrast to another program destination: Ayacucho, one of the poorest and most rural regions of Peru and the former base of the Maoist Sendero Luminoso. Visit the desert coast to learn how shifting weather patterns and loss of water resources ended the Nazca civilization. While there, visit a national Guano factory and see an excellent example of the impact of unrestrained tourism on the environment and on native wildlife at the Islas Ballestas National Park. Learn about the unique economic system of the Incas and the implications of the Conquistadors search for gold during an extended trip to Cusco, center of the Sacred Valley and the Incan Civilization. Examine internationally controlled ecotourism along the Inca Trail and at Machu Picchu and compare it to the unrestrained development of Aguas Calientes. In Puno and Lake Titicaca, study how tourism has affected the indigenous Uros peoples, who live on floating islands made of reeds. Through this program, you will experience the results of the theory and practice of macroeconomics and the economics of lesser-developed countries while studying the economic system of Peru and visiting government agencies, international development agencies and banks. You will examine first hand the environmental issues associated with development and sustainable tourism as an economic industry through visits to Ayacucho, Lake Titicaca, Nazca, Cusco, and Machu Picchu. All courses will be taught by accompanying UW Oshkosh faculty at the Universidad del Pac?fico.http://www.peru.org.pe/perueng.asp Updated information is now available for this program at http://www.uwosh.edu/oie/abroad/perubusiness.php . Program fees are currently estimated at $3,290- $3,490 based on 15-20 students. There are no additional tuition costs. The more students who sign up for this program, the lower the cost per student will be. You can help lower your cost to study abroad by recruiting friends and classmates to join you in this experience! For information on what these program fees cover and for an estimate of other expenses associated with the trip (e.g. passport fees, meal costs, etc.), seehttp://www.uwosh.edu/oie/abroad/perubusiness.php#fees . For this program, applications will be accepted first-come, first-served either until the program is full or until the application deadline, whichever occurs first (students from universities other than UW Oshkosh and community members will be assigned any available seats just after the application deadline). University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for our six-week summer program in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The program examines the lives and cultures of the ethnic minorities, in particular the Hmong, who call Thailand home. Students take 2 three-credit courses: Culture of Ethnic Groups in Thailand and Sustainable Development: Conservation of the Environment. Both the academic courses and the field excursions are planned to introduce students to the major upland (tribal) groups of Thailand- Karen, Hmong, Mien, Akha, Lahu, and Lisu. The focus of the field excursions, in particular, will be more in-depth interaction with some of the Hmong groups in Thailand. The academic program will include classroom instruction, field excursions, and lectures by local activists, scholars, and representatives of organizations working on issues of local sustainability, cultural preservation, human rights, and other issues. We ask that you make students and faculty aware of this unique program. In particular, we have found that many of our Hmong-American students have found the program meaningful for heritage reasons. If you could notify your multicultural office on campus about the program, we would be most grateful. The priority application deadline is November 15, 2007. However, after the priority deadline, we will accept students on a rolling basis until the program is full or until January 17, 2008. Interested students and faculty should contact Colleen Marchwick at (715) 836-4411 or marchwcc at uwec.edu. Applications are also available on our website at http://www.uwec.edu/CIE/sac/onlineapp.htm#NonUWECApplication To learn more about this program (cost, dates, eligibility requirements, etc), please see the information below or visit our website: http://www.uwec.edu/CIE/sac/program/chiangmai.htm . U.S. Signs Work and Travel Agreements with New Zealand, Australia From NAFSA.newsSeptember 18, 2007The U.S. Department of State (DOS) has signed agreements with New Zealand and Australia to allow young people the opportunity to work and travel for up to 12 months. The agreements will be implemented in the United States under the Summer Work Travel regulations at 8 C.F.R. ? 62.32 and Pilot Programs are scheduled to take effect October 31, 2007. DOS will provide more information on implementation in the coming month. Programs for U.S. Citizens to Work and Travel in New Zealand or Australia For U.S. citizens wishing to work and travel in Australia, the recent agreement between DOS and the Australian government changes eligibility requirements as well as the length of time allowed. Previously, U.S. citizens between the ages of 18 and 30 were only allowed to work and travel in Australia for up to four months through the Youth from the USA program.Under the agreement signed September 4, 2007, the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship would create a designated Australian Working Holiday Program for U.S. citizens who are postsecondary students or who hold postsecondary qualifications. The new program would allow qualified individuals up to 12 months of work and travel in Australia, as well as the opportunity to study for up to four months without the need for a separate student visa. Young people who are not postsecondary students or graduates may still be eligible for the four-month Youth from the USA program. For U.S. citizens wishing to work and travel in New Zealand, the agreement signed September 10, 2007 with New Zealand would not alter the current New Zealand Working Holiday Scheme for U.S. citizens. Under the program, U.S. citizens between the ages of 18 and 30 who meet eligibility criteria may travel and work in New Zealand for up to one year. There are no requirements that the U.S. citizen is a current student or recent graduate. Senator Russ Feingold's office is looking for education and non-education examples of Wisconsinites who have engaged in citizen diplomacy and how it has affected their lives. He needs a brief paragraph from the person explaining what they did (went overseas, hosted an exchange student, etc) and how it changed their world view (for example, "I now look more critically at media coverage, I understand other cultures, I started a new program at my school", etc). Anyone writing a paragraph must write in their email message that they give the Senator permission to speak publicly about their experience. I will gather any messages we receive from UW Oshkosh students and community members tomorrow at noon and forward them. This is very urgent - I'm hoping this has something to do with the S. 991: Senator Paul Simon Study Abroad Foundation Act of 2007, which may allocate millions in study abroad grants to students (this has already been passed by the House but has only been introduced in the Senate). http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=s110-991 It would be great to have responses from students, alumni and community members. Here's an interesting topic!? On Thursday, September 27 from 4:00-5:15 in Polk Library 116a, there will be a live, interactive video lecture by Donald Raleigh, discussing Soviet Baby Boomers.?? Donald Raleigh is one of the leading U.S. experts on the Soviet Union and a dynamic speaker.?? Please join us to learn about how the post-war generation of Soviet citizens understand their lives and are dealing with the disconcerting world in which they now find themselves.?? Find below an even more detailed description of the talk and the speaker's biography. Thank you, ?Dr. ?Karl Loewenstein Thursday, September 27, 2007, 4:00 PM " Russia 's Sputnik Generation: Interviewing Soviet Baby Boomers" Donald J. Raleigh, Jay Richard Judson Distinguished Professor of History, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Sponsor: CREECA About the lecture: This presentation traces the transformative developments of the second half of the twentieth century that brought down the Soviet empire through the life stories of the country's first post-World-War-II generation. The seventy or so individuals in the study graduated in 1967 from Moscow's School No. 20 or from the provincial city of Saratov's School No. 42, newly opened "magnet" schools that offered intensive instruction in English. Part of the USSR's "Sputnik generation" that began school the year the USSR lifted the first artificial satellite into space, they grew up during the Cold War, but in a Soviet Union that increasingly distanced itself from the "excesses" of Stalinism. During this generation's childhood and young adulthood, the Soviet leadership dismantled the Gulag, ruled without terror, promoted consumerism, and opened the country in teaspoon-size doses to an outside world that feared Soviet-style Communism. Reaching their prime during the Gorbachev era, these Soviet baby boomers today constitute elements of Russia's and other countries' professional urban class. In telling the story of this cross-section of the country's Sputnik generation in its own words, I hope to throw light on a critical generation of people who had remained largely faceless and unstudied up until now. Equally important, my investigation is one of the first in Russian studies to employ the methodologies of oral history. About the speaker: Donald J. Raleigh, the Jay Richard Judson Distinguished Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has written several books, chapters, journal articles, and encyclopedia entries on Russian and Soviet politics and culture. Raleigh's most recent publication is an anthology of Russian life stories that he edited and translated, called Russia's Sputnik Generation: Soviet Baby Boomers Talk About Their Lives, published by Indiana University Press in 2006. His other major publications include Experiencing Russia 's Civil War: Politics, Society, and Revolutionary Culture in Saratov Province, 1917-1922 (2002); Revolution on the Volga: 1917 in Saratov (1986); and a memoir, Zalozhnik proletariata, published by Saratov University Press in 2002. Raleigh has also translated or edited several books and essay collections, including Provincial Landscapes: Local Dimensions of Soviet Power, 1917-1953 (2001), and has served as an associate editor of the four-volume Encyclopedia of Russian History (2004).? ? Moreover, students will take trips to London, Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon, Windsor, Warwick, and other places to see some of the world's greatest sites and treasures. Classes meet at Homerton College, part of the University of Cambridge, on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday mornings, and field trips take place on Thursdays and Fridays. Courses are taught by UW Oshkosh Professor Dr. Larry Carlin. Weekends are free for students to explore the cultural setting on their own. The University of Cambridge operates on what is known as the 'collegiate' system. All students at the University of Cambridge must be members of a College (though College here has a different meaning than "College" at UW Oshkosh). The University is responsible for the administration of the courses of study which lead to the award of degrees, and the Colleges provide for students' other needs such as living arrangements and social activities, as well as facilities. Please note that this program is 50% filled. If you plan to graduate at the end of fall 2007 and you need this program/course, apply now! See first-hand the changes taking place as Europe transitions from the political and economic "east/west" division. Spend two weeks in Munich, Germany and Prague & Ostrava , Czech Republic attending presentations at international businesses and visiting places of cultural and historical significance within the countries. Testimonials I am so thankful I attended this business study tour because it really opened my eyes to how international business really works. We learn all about it in classes and how globalized our world is becoming, but there is only so much you can grasp by sitting in a classroom and learning about it through lectures. By actually traveling abroad and learning about the business aspects of a different country, I can really understand how it all works. Lindsay Mahlberg, 2007 undergraduate participant As a graduate student, I was a bit hesitant to sign up for the European Business seminar. Would dedicating ten days of vacation time taking a class really be worthwhile? As it turned out, the European study trip was more than just a class it was the experience of a lifetime. Our visits to the cities of Munich and Prague provided a glimpse of doing business in a global environment. Oh, we saw the normal tourist attractions, but our tour guides also gave us a chance to experience European culture outside the normal tourist scene. Try getting that from your next Apple vacation! The European study tour provided the perfect end to my graduate experience.
