Message-ID: <6.1.2.0.2.20061025081403.01b376d0@mail.uwosh.edu> Dear INTL Listserv Members: I was recently contacted by UW-RF about their Wisconsin in Scotland program, which was run by a consortium of five UW System institutions. Recently Eau Claire and LaCrosse have decided to pull out, and RF invited UW Oshkosh to be a sending institution. Wisconsin in Scotland is a long running, well developed and successful study abroad model that sends up to 80 students and 3-5 faculty members to Dalkeith (a castle just outside of Edinburgh) each term. Students with at least sophomore standing can participate for either one semester, for the academic year, or for the six-week summer program. Courses are taught by UW System faculty and British adjunct faculty during the fall and spring semesters. All courses are designed to take advantage of the Scottish setting. Fall and spring semester students are required to enroll for a minimum of 12 credits. Summer participants are required to enroll for a minimum of 6 credits. During the semester program, there is the opportunity for independent study/directed study courses and/or internships with home campus approval. The semester program allows time for independent travel with a 10-day break and several long weekends. The summer program allows three days of travel/exploration most weekends. Many cultural activities are included in each program. Please help us promote the Wisconsin in Scotland program to UW Oshkosh students by sharing the message below my signature or by making announcements in your classes. If you would like to become an active advocate for this program, please let me know. I'll stop by and talk with you about this program in depth and make sure that you get flyers to hand out and posters to hang. More information on the program is also available at http://www.uwrf.edu/wis/overview2.htm Sincerely, Jenna Graff Office of International Education University of Wisconsin Oshkosh 800 Algoma Blvd Oshkosh, WI 54901 -------- http://www.uwosh.edu/oie/oie.html Phone: (920)424-0775 Fax: (920)424-0185 Dear Students, We are now announcing a new study abroad opportunity for UW Oshkosh students - in Scotland!!! Immerse yourself in Scottish culture and become a part of the community of Dalkeith! Join UW students from around the System for a semester or summer in Scotland. Study under University of Wisconsin and University of Edinburgh professors while living in Dalkeith House, an 18th century manor house known to the Scots as Dalkeith Palace. The program includes planned extracurricular activities to acquaint students with various facets of British culture, history, politics, and daily life plus course-related field trips, house field trips and time for independent travel around Scotland or Europe. Internship Obtain practical experience in your field of study! WIS offers a limited number of unpaid internships at multiple internship sites (semester program only). Friendship Family Take advantage of this incredible opportunity to spend time with a Scottish family and enhance your understanding of the Scottish host culture! While you do not live with the family, you may be invited for meals, occasional outings to local points of interest or other family activities. This free host family program is offered during the fall and spring semesters; placement depends on the number of students who sign up. Location WIS takes you to Dalkeith, a bustling village just six miles southeast of Edinburgh in the Midlothian region of Scotland. Edinburgh and the surrounding region provide an ideal environment for educational programs. The richness of British history, politics, literature, poetry, arts, and other subjects come alive at every turn. Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland since 1124, is a classic European city. There the medieval grandeur of Old Town, crowned by Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood House, joins harmoniously with the modern attractions of New Town. The natural beauty of the Scottish landscape and its coastline provide a majestic background for exploration, education, and enrichment. The Dalkeith Estate (the estate on which Dalkeith House is located) is pastoral living at its finest. There are several nature trails, fishing, the adventure park and all sorts of animals: sheep, cattle, horses, ponies, pigs, goats, pheasants and fox, just to name a few. There is also a full time ranger service. Although seventy students may be studying through WIS each semester/summer, a number of UW System institutions send students on this program and only approximately fifteen seats are available to UW Oshkosh students (the program is administered through UW-River Falls). For more information on the application process, please visit http://www.uwosh.edu/oie/faqs.html. If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at oie at uwosh.edu, call us at 424-0775 or stop by to see us in Dempsey 146! I met Mr. Noel Quinlivan (yes, he's Irish) and visited this institute as part of a tour I participated in this past March. Details on Pamplona Spanish Institute are available from http://pamplonaspanishinstitute.com/ While this is an intensive language institute, faculty/departments could work with this institute to design a course in an area related to a group of students' major field of study. Courses would be taught in Spanish, possibly by faculty from a nearby university (depending on how you want to build your program), but with course credit granted by the sending department (e.g. if History were to send a group of students to study European History in Spanish, the courses earned would be history courses). A second option, for students who already have language skills, is completion of an internship in administration or marketing. If you are interested in meeting with Mr. Quinlivan, please let me know a.s.a.p. and I will invite him to visit us at UW Oshkosh.
