This trip takes a ?train the trainers? approach, immersing you in an intensive service experience in order to help you learn how to coordinate future service-learning programs for students at your own school. This expedition will give you the grounding you need in service-learning and civic engagement to develop ? or refine ? a service-learning program that will provide a high educational benefit to your students and a commensurate benefit to the communities you visit. During the nine-day expedition, we will live in a remote community in the highlands of the Dominican Republic and work with the community through a local non-governmental organization. The day-to-day schedule will model best practices for a service-learning program. In addition to your work in the community, an experienced facilitator will guide you through learning about both theoretical and practical aspects of service-learning programs. You will analyze a broad range of strategies for preparation, engagement, and reflection with students. And you will discuss issues such as service-learning theory, selection of a project and partner organization, and risk minimization. The curriculum is designed and co-taught by Carrie Williams Howe, the Associate Director of Community-University Partnerships and Service-Learning (CUPS) at the University of Vermont. The training is offered by The LiveLearning Program (www.livelearning.org), a non-profit organization that operates service-learning trainings and student trips in Latin America to promote responsible social change, in conjunction with the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). The training is open to and appropriate for all educators, regardless of school affiliation. Dates: June 17th ? 25th. Cost: $1,700. Subsidies are available. Professional Development/Graduate credits will likely be available (we will know by April 23). Cost includes all trip expenses except airfare, related arrival/departure taxes and textbook ($19.99). For more information contact alex at livelearning.org.
