From graff at uwosh.edu Wed May 9 16:08:29 2007 From: graff at uwosh.edu (Jennifer Graff) Date: Wed, 09 May 2007 16:08:29 -0500 Subject: [Intl] Earn a Masters Degree in Finland tuition free. Apply for a student grant as well! Message-ID: <0JHS00BGWLE7D130@europa.uwosh.edu> Dear INTL Listserv Members: Please share the following with graduating seniors who might be interested in a Masters Program in Atmosphere-Biosphere Studies, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Forest Sciences and Business, Geoinformatics, Plant Production Science, or Space Sciences. How about earning your graduate degree abroad? How about earning it in Finland - tuition free? Wouldn't it be nice to receive a Student Grant for the 2007-2008 academic year (9 months) covering 1,000 euros (US$1,350) per month, a travel award of 1,600 US dollars and an accident and sickness insurance package for the grant period? If you're interested in Atmosphere-Biosphere Studies, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Forest Sciences and Business, Geoinformatics, Plant Production Science, or Space Sciences, you're in luck! A new grant opportunity opens this year for American students interested in studying in Finland for the academic year 2008-2009. The Fulbright Center works with the University of Helsinki to offer the award to a student admitted to one of the Universitys International Masters Degree Programs. The University of Helsinki is the leading research university in Finland and consistently ranks among the top 20 universities in Europe. The University offers a multi-disciplinary and international study environment and the services and infrastructure, including libraries, laboratories and computer environments, are world-class. The University offers several International Masters Degree Programs taught in English, currently including Atmosphere-Biosphere Studies, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Forest Sciences and Business, Geoinformatics, Plant Production Science, and Space Sciences. Some of the programs are provided jointly by the University of Helsinki and other Finnish or foreign universities. Several new ones are also in the making. Students in these two-year programs will find themselves in a truly international learning environment with a mixture of students from Finland and across the globe. More information is available at http://www.helsinki.fi/internationalprogrammes/ . Additional information on the university can be found at http://www.helsinki.fi/university/ . BENEFITS The Fulbright Student Grant sponsored by the University of Helsinki is available for one academic year (9 months). For the year 2007-2008, the award is 1 000 euros per month. Grantees also receive a travel award of 1 600 dollars and an accident and sickness insurance for the grant period. Additionally, grantees receive the full support services provided by the Fulbright Center and assistance with securing quite affordable student housing. There are currently no tuition fees for degree students in universities in Finland - education is subsidized by the State through the Ministry of Education. At the University of Helsinki this applies also to the international degree students as well as exchange and visiting non-degree students. ELIGIBILITY The Fulbright student award competition is open to American students who hold a Master's or a Bachelor's degree. Academically talented graduating seniors may also apply before having the degree in hand. For the University of Helsinki sponsored award, preference is given to applicants admitted to one of the Universitys International Masters Degree Programs. However, master-level non-degree students can also be considered. For more information, please read through the web pages linked above. Additionally, be sure to contact UW Oshkosh's Dr. Jeffrey Kapplan, who has just returned from Helsinki and can be an extremely valuable resource to anyone interested in and/or going through the application process. You can reach Dr. Kaplan at kaplan at uwosh.edu, at 424-7072 or by stopping by A/C 313.
