(Take Action: Don't Let Congress Undo State and Local Animal Laws https://community.hsus.org/campaign/FED_2007_farmbill?qp_source=gabaw2 ). Thru the US Farm Bill, Congress is threatening to undo all of the progress that has been on the state on local levels, regarding farmed aniaml welfare. I personally wrote and phoned US Senators Feingold and Kohl, and Congressman Petri, but got nothing but empty form letters that didn't even address the subject of farmed animal welfare in reply. Feingold's email reply is copied below. If you believe that farmed animals ought to be treated humanely, too, you cannot afford to ignore this: July 5, 2007 The Great Federal Power Grab Section 123 of Title I of the Farm Bill is the most worrying legislation you've never heard of... I appreciate hearing from you. The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Tom Harkin (D-IA), has not announced any official time-line for consideration of the 2007 Farm Bill. I welcome any comments or ideas you may have about the Farm Bill. I have heard from many Wisconsinites about various Farm Bill programs of particular interest to them, from conservation programs to food stamps to disaster insurance for farmers. I will monitor the Farm Bill closely and work diligently to ensure that the programs that are vital to the people of Wisconsin are included. You specifically mentioned your concern about a section of the House version of the bill that would prohibit state and local governments from banning an article that the Secretary of Agriculture has inspected and passed, or determined to be of non- regulated status. I will closely monitor the Senate bill for any such provision when it becomes available. I have long-standing concerns about legislation that would weaken the ability of states to protect residents, as well as the health and safety of their residents. Again, I welcome any additional comments you have about the Farm Bill. Thanks again for contacting me. I look forward to hearing from you in the future. Sincerely, Russell D.
