Hi Everyone!

Just a couple things I wanted to pass along...

This Thursday, November 9th from 5-8pm there will be a speaker in Reeve 201.  The topic of the presentation is alternative ways of dealing with domestic abuse.  This speaker has been on Oprah, and talks about working together as a family to deal with issues of violence, rather than seperating the abuser from spouse and children.  

Also... be sure to get out and VOTE tomorrow, Tuesday, November 7th!!  This is a VERY important election and we need students to get their voices heard!  Rides will be available to off-campus polling places every half hour from 7am-8pm.  Meet in front of the OSA office, which is in the SLIC in Reeve to the left if you enter through the Algoma Blvd doors.  Please don't pass up this opportunity!

Gender Equity Council ~ OSA is looking for another student to sit on this.  Jean stepped up and will be hopefully appointed next week.  Way to go Jean!!
 
Old Business:
Women?s History Month ~ Marianne looked into ?Body and Soul? and it will cost $100 to buy rights to perform with the script.  We will be contacting the Theater Arts Board (TAB) and the Theater Department to see if they are interested in helping us.  We are looking for the performances dates in late March to early April.  Also, we will help with CARE while they put on the Clothesline Project in late February to early March.  They are bringing in SOARS (Stories of a Rape Survivor) to campus the beginning of March.  ?The Vagina Monologues? are fast approaching.  For information, contact Molly.
Applications for Co-director ~ As you know Marianne will be stepping down at semester so we need a new Co-Director to join Molly in leading WAC.  Applications were emailed out to the WAC list, but if you would still like one contact Molly and she can forward the application to you.  These will be due before leaving for Thanksgiving Break.

Subject: [WAC-list] WMST 320, Gendered Lives, OPEN for spring

Hello, everyone.  I am one of the faculty advisors for WAC, and am 
advertising a course that I will be teaching in spring, I hope. 

It is called Gendered Lives, WMST/Liberal Studies 320.  It is a 3 credit 
course, but it only meets during the first 7 weeks of the semester, with 
one class meeting per week in person, Tuesdays from 6:30 to 9:30, and 
one class per week ONLINE--the schedule makes it look like you'd have to 
be in class for 3 hours on Saturday morning, but that isn't true. There 
will be a reading assignment and D2L discussion for the online portion 
of the class, and students will need to complete it by noon on Saturday, 
but there is NOT a requirement that you be online at any specific time, 
as long as it is done by Saturday noon.  Then, there will be another 
reading assignment for the in-person class the following Tuesday, and so 
on.

 The course content involves looking at gender differences through the 
lifespan: we will talk about how boys and girls experience socialization 
as children; explore adolescent patterns of female and male teens; 
examine how women and men's expectations for and experiences of 
relationships, families, and careers, especially juggling all three, 
differ; and then we'll focus on aging: how old women and old men face 
different challenges in their later years. 

We will work hard during those first seven weeks of spring, but then, 
the course will be over before spring break in March!

If you have any questions about the course, let me know.  It is 
cross-listed with the adult degree program of the Center for New Learning,
and when I taught it a couple of years ago, we had a very interesting 
mix of students, creating good discussions.


.I found out last night that the course had been listed, wrongly, as 
closed, and so it had one person in it!  I need to have 14 enrolled by 
next Friday, Nov. 17.  Six students enrolled today, but  I'd appreciate 
any help you can give me in getting the word out about the course, and 
registering, if it sounds interesting to you!  WMST number: 42560, 
Liberal Studies number: .42453.

Hi Everyone- Here are this weeks meeting minutes.  Lots of good stuff happening, so read up!

Women's Advocacy Council 
Minutes 11/27/2006
Attendance: Jennifer, Helen, Marianne, Molly, Bethany, Anna, Kay

New Business:
-RACE FOR THE LIGHT:  This Saturday, December 2nd.  A 5K (3.1ml) walk/run.  Proceeds benefit the Christine Ann Center.  Registration is at 4pm on Saturday at the Downtown YMCA, the race begins at 5 and goes through the Menominee Park Celebration of Lights.  Registration in advance is $15, day of is $20.
-SLIC HOLIDAY DECORATING.  WAC is going to make tampon angels!  If you wanna participate, or just donate, take a couple tampons out of the applicator, soak in water and let dry for a couple of days. The expanded cotton act as angel wings, we'll decorate them fully at WAC on Monday!  We can use other holiday decorations people want to offer (ribbon, garland, etc.)
-NEW WAC T SHIRTS:  Over spring semester WAC will be working on getting new tee shirts.  If you or anyone you know is creative and wants to help us come up with a sweet logo and/or quote to put on our shirts, please submit any ideas to Marianne (radlem96) or Molly (smithm11)!!
-GET THE WORD OUT ABOUT WAC:  The Women's Advocacy Council wants to attempt to flyer campus to make more people aware about our organization and the kinds of things we do.  Same with the Women's Center.  If you have any ideas on interesting things WAC could say to get people interested, please let us know!
-BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS:  This organization just received a $7,000 grant.  They are looking to work with college students, specifically sororities on campus, but I am sure they would love any volunteer from campus.  If interested, please be in touch!
-FINALS WEEK AT THE WOMEN'S CENTER:  WAC is going to be in charge of Tuesday night, December 12th at the Women's Center.  If you are interested in volunteering to run the place for any amount of time, please let us know.  Otherwise, the WC is a wonderful and QUIET place to study for your exams.  Plus we're providing pizza :)

OSA Report:
-ADOPT A PLATOON:  OSA is taking donations for a platoon they adopted in Iraq.  Donations can be dropped off at the Women's Center or to Jill in the OSA office.  
-BELL RINGING:  There will be a Salvation Army kettle and aprons in the OSA office, ready to be put into action next week in the Union Concourse from 11-2.  If interested contact Jill in the OSA office or Marianne.
-SUPPORT THE TROOPS EVENT:  Tomorrow night, Tuesday November 28th in the Titan Underground from 6-10pm.  $5 donation to get in, goes towards care packages for the troops.  Chance to win a Brett Favre autographed helmet.
