The Advance Titan Article ~ Email to Molly: Ms. Smith, My name is Tyler Maas and I am the Lighter Side editor of the Advance-Titan. I was forwarded your email by a co-worker and I would like to take some time to briefly discuss my feelings on the issue with you. So if I may, I would first like to apologize for any negative inclusions you may have viewed as offensive and/or unacceptable. I was one of the main components of the compilation of this issue. While I did not write the MEC or Women's Center stories that seem to be most affecting the student body, I was the first person to glance over them and I assure you, numerous items were cut and "cleaned up" to be made less offensive. Before a single story was rendered, I assure you that we ran every story idea through a group workshop where, myself and no less than four others approved each story pitched. Unfortunately, many of the previously unspecified inclusions to the approved stories did contain various controversial issues. Before a story made a page, it ran through three copy editors...who scrutinized the content, the editor in chief, both the A and B section editors and I. various sets of eyes read and judged each story for acceptability in content. More tame suggestions were given to the writers to help in making changes, and we severely altered numerous items to make them more acceptable. However, I do understand that some reads might have still viewed the published content in a negative light. Though it may sound like an excuse of our offensive action, humor is an odd thing. Sadly, comedians like Carlos Mencia and Dave Chapelle who focus on mainly racist and sexist material are tremendously successful. I am troubled by the backlash to this issue, not solely because people are angry, but because I and countless others poured a considerable amount of work into this and to think that an issue meant to be fun to read and to cause laughter might have offended or hurt people. I pride myself of being a fair, open and understanding person who respects all others. The Advance-Titan as a whole strives to uphold journalistic integrity and fairness which each issue as well. I cannot speak for the entire A-T staff or even for others involved in the compilation of this issue, but I would like to extend a personal apology to you Ms. Smith. I will be meeting with Chancellor Wells and Petra Roter tonight and plan to apologize to them as well. If you care to discuss things with me further, fell free to email me back at this address. Old Business: The Advance Titan Article ~ In today?s issue there is an article about the April Fool?s edition: A-T April Fool?s issue receives mixed responses Opinion by Mike Cowling, A-T Ombudsman Issue: Thursday, April 12, 2007 Beware of those tangled webs our words can weave. That is not an original thought. But it seems appropriate in discussing the reaction to some articles in the recent April Fool?s edition of the Advance-Titan. I must admit that I am not a fan of such editions. Sure, it can be fun to write parodies and satirical articles to lampoon the establishment or draw attention to a real issue. But inevitably some people will disagree with you or misunderstand your attempts at wittiness or irony and criticize you as being insensitive. Three stories seemed to elicit the most ire. One used the ?Pimp My Ride? show as an approach to skewer the powers that be for not making much-needed repairs to the Multicultural Education Center. Was there some stereotyping in the article? Perhaps so. Was a valid point made about the neglect of the MEC? Definitely so. You can argue about the quality of the writing as a piece of satire. But it hit the target because the building needs extensive renovations. The A-T last semester ran a Page 1 story on how it could cost up to $300,000 to make the proper repairs. Perhaps the satire, even if flawed, will bring more attention to this problem. Another story that some people found offensive talked about how nontraditional students had rioted on St. Patrick?s Day. Was the purpose to belittle or berate nontraditional students? Not likely. Older nontraditional students might remember the 1970s when there really were riots near campus, sparked by students who had too much to drink. As a result, the university began scheduling spring break around St. Patrick?s Day so most students would be gone. Only recently has the university decided it is safe to have students around on that holiday and to schedule spring break at other times. Was it fair to poke fun at the university for its longtime fretting about over-imbibing students? Certainly. A third story that brought complaints was about Howard Stern being named director of the Women?s Center. I?m not sure what the point of that story was, other than to emphasize that Stern is an idiot who makes a living in large part with his ability to degrade women. So, should the A-T staff be punished for publishing the April Fool?s edition? Someone suggested that the student newspaper be forced to cease publishing. That seems pretty extreme, especially if you value freedom of speech. The best way to express your dissatisfaction with any publication is to fight fire with fire, to use a clich?, or to use words to challenge what has been written. This can be done through letters to the editor, guest columns, blogs, or any number of other forms of communication. That is what freedom of speech allows all of us to do. The A-T ran several letters last week about the April Fool?s edition. Some were quite critical; other letter writers said they liked it. In an editorial in the same issue, the A-T said it wanted to ?apologize to anyone who may have been offended by any of the articles.? It went on to say: ?We crossed lines we should not have crossed.? Apologizing to anyone who felt offended was appropriate. But did the writers really cross some unacceptable lines? Was any of the writing racially motivated? Was it hate speech? Was it done to ridicule or marginalize specific individuals or groups of people? Some of the criticism came after Chancellor Richard Wells sent a campus-wide e-mail message about the April Fool?s issue. He noted that the university community supports ?a civil atmosphere and a tolerant environment for learning.? Wells also encouraged individuals to ?express their concerns directly? to the A-T. That was good advice, although people at a university should not have to be reminded it is their right to do so. Any criticism should be directed at the newspaper. In this case, however, was a message from the chancellor to everyone on campus necessary? Petra Roter, the vice chancellor for student affairs, said that before the chancellor sent his message on April 4 she had responded to 11 e-mail complaints from students about the spoof edition. That would represent about 0.1 percent of the student population. That is hardly an outcry for heads to roll, although other administrators and faculty probably received some complaints. Wells, Roter, Provost Lane Earns and the university?s marketing and communications director also met with members of the A-T staff later in the day on April 4. Wells had said in his message that a meeting was being set up with members of the staff. Stephanie Barnard, the editor of the A-T, said ?It would have been nice if we had had an open forum,? instead of just students meeting with administrators. One staff member said it felt like ?being called into the principal?s office.? Wells said the purpose of the meeting was not to intimidate, but to ?show our concern and to offer advice and help.? Is there a lesson in all of this? Educators like to call it a ?teaching moment,? a time for discussion and learning. The A-T staff knows that words can be powerful, and they should be used judiciously. But the students should not be afraid to use parody and satire because they are among the many tools of communication. And everyone should know that if you try to censor or silence the media, you are ultimately censoring or silencing your own voices.
