CCRV is a bill that requires all Emergency Rooms accross the state to provide medically accurate information to rape victims about emergency contraception and to dispense EC upon request. (Dispense being the key word). In February we passed a resolution asking all campuses to take action around CCRV during the months of March and April. Here are 2 great opportunities: 1) Call your legislators and ask them to co-sponsor CCRV. This is important to do even if your legislator has supported this in the past (thank them) or if they are vehemently opposed (they should know that their constituants believe that this is positive legislation- last year, the outcry was so great that we swayed one legislator in Eau Claire). Not sure of who your legislators are? Check out http://waml.legis.state.wi.us/. AIDS Awareness Speaker for next year (Helen) ~ I recently received a flyer about Women's History Month events at UNC Greensboro, and saw a familiar face--one of my former students in Florida, Cathy Robinson, spoke about being raped when she took my Intro class in the late 1980s. Then, in the early 1990s, I saw her on the local TV news, talking about how she had just found out she was HIV positive as a result of the rape; she lost her job, had two small kids--luckily, neither was HIV positive--and Florida law at the time prevented the state from informing his 14 victims that the man who raped them had died of AIDS in jail. Anyway, I contacted Cathy and she came to speak to my intro class, and she was terrific. I googled her, and she now is making a business of speaking. Do you think there would be interest in bringing her here? I pasted in her website below. If you are interested, I could try to contact her. I know she had everyone in my class in tears; they passed the hat to give her some help, which I have not seen students do often.
