[D2lnews] Rounding Errors in Gradebooks with Auto-Weighted Categories
Rounding Errors May Impact Final Grade Calculations in Weighted
Gradebooks with Auto-Weighted Categories
NOTE: this only affects you if A) you use weights AND B) you use
categories AND C) you have categories where the items within the
category have the weight evenly distributed. If you use points, delete
this message. If you don't use categories, delete this message. If you
aren't sure if this applies to you, drop me an email with your course
URL (go to the course, highlight the URL/address, copy, paste in an
email) and I will check for you.
If you are using a Weighted gradebook with categories and have checked
the option "Distribute weights evenly across all items in the category"
to force all items with the category to be automatically equally
there is a possibility that the final grade will be miscalculated by a
hundredths of a percent. Some of the grades displayed in the
view of the gradebook will also be a few hundredths of a percent off.
For example, a single grade could display as 84.97% instead of the
correct value of 85% and, more importantly, the final grade could be
calculated as 79.97% instead of a correct value of 80%.
This is a known issue.
Possible workarounds are manually altering the grade values for a grade
item or turning on and off the "Override Display Settings" option.
However, the only sure way of avoiding possible rounding errors in the
final grade calculation is to specify weights manually and not use
"Distribute weights evenly across all items in the category".
If you are using a Points gradebook or a Weighted gradebook without
checking "Distribute weights evenly across all items in the category"
for any categories, the final grade will be correctly calculated.
However, there is still a slight chance that grades displaying in the
instructor view of the gradebook will be off a few hundredths of a
All grades will display correctly in the student view.
Please let me know if you need assistance with this. I have not had
reports from this campus about it but it has been reported elsewhere in
