Re: [WSMTE] Fwd: Student teaching seminar question

dear all --

our student teachers are generally placed in kenosha, racine, and milwaukee county schools. we try to use a mix of placement settings that involve both the more diverse student populations of racine unified district and kenosha unified districts as well as those more homogenous schools west of interstate 94 or in the south "collar" communities of milwaukee county. this limits the radius to a maximum of 35-40 miles. we -- mark eichner and i -- do our own supervision. we also largely decide placements, but try to do so in a way that effects the best match of student teacher to directing teacher and school setting. we have not run into any extenuating circumstances that would dictate placing a student in a school outside of this three-county area.

student teachers are expected to come to campus for seminar, which is run by our teacher education folks. i know of some situations where students had an understanding that, due to distance traversed, they would arrive late, or of students needing to miss a seminar meeting or two due to some specific placement-related activities, but i know of no outright exceptions sought or granted.

Plattville requires all student teacher to return for seminars, but do exempt students with internships from the seminars.

Hi Ken,

Thanks for forwarding my initial inquiry.

This brings me to a related question:

Do all student teachers, regardless of the distance of their placement, attend a student teaching seminar? What does that look like at your institution?

Can you post this question as well?

Many thanks,
Laura
